What to buy kids that isn’t crap for Christmas

What to buy kids that isn’t crap for Christmas

It’s hard to find a child who is over the moon when receiving a card to let them know they’ve sponsored a village cow. It’s not that they’re on the highway to moral bankruptcy, but you know, it’s not a fidget spinner / drone / L.O.L Doll (we will NOT be linking this). So how do you buy cool gifts for children that are in line with your values AND is something they’ll like (and use)?

Make them a voucher book of experiences

This one is great because (with some animated explanation) it makes you look really fun and creative, plus it’s a gift that lasts all year. You can make the experiences everything from being their servant for a day (kidding, that’s everyday) to taking them to the movies or letting them choose your outfit. Actually, this one is so good, we should just stop here.

Get them a fun (read: educational) subscription box

Warning, if they’re opening this after, say, Lego or a puppy, you won’t get a great response. BUT it’s a gift that keeps on giving, and they’ll realise how fun it is after the novelty of a Duplo pizza cafe wears off. KiwiCo does a great one, but there are loads of other great companies popping up.

Do a sneaky regifting swap with another family

Ok, this one is controversial, but every family has a toy/s their child wouldn’t notice if they, say, ‘disappeared’ and was swapped with a toy from another family. The present is new, but not. This could be genius if you have people on the same eco wavelength as you. If not, they’ll think you’re really cheap.

Adopt an endangered species (and get a toy)

You can help the WWF support endangered species AND get a cute plush toy for the child in your life to unwrap. This is a double win. And, yeah, even though you’re an adult with responsibilities and mature understanding of the plight of endangered animals, it’s ok to giggle at the Red Footed Booby.

Buy a ball, give a ball

People say soccer/football is a universal game that brings people together. While 90 minutes + overtime still seems like a long time to watch sport, especially if you don’t like the people you’re with, Park Social Soccer Co has a wonderful program of buy one, give one for their soccer balls.

If you’re looking for a great gift for adults, check out toilet paper. Actually, just skip it and get them the booby.
